WHO IS THE CHILD WITH A SPECIFIC LEARNING DISABILITY AND ATTENTION DEFICIT DISORDER?

Children with Attention Deficit Disorders have difficulty concentrating and completing tasks.  They may appear to make careless mistakes and don’t  seem to listen to instructions.  They commonly underachieve academically and are often labelled as naughty or disobedient.  They may suffer from poor self-esteem and have difficulty making and keeping friends.

With proper medical and social attention, children with ADHD can be helped.  Making the diagnosis and managing ADHD  appropriately can improve their performance in all areas of life, especially at school.

CAUSES OF ATTENTION DEFICIT DISORDERS

ADHD is not caused by poor parenting or the environment.  ADHD is rather a chemical imbalance in the brain affecting neurotransmitters Dapamine and Nor-Adrenaline.  For this reason the number one treatment is medication.

THE ROLE OF THE EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGIST AND EDUCATIONAL SPECIALIST AT PROSPECTUS NOVUS SCHOOL

At Prospectus Novus School it is of the utmost importance that a holistic approach be followed and that the children develop in totality.  We thus do not only focus on the child’s academic progress but also on his/her emotional well-being.  The Educational Psychologist acts as coordinator of the multi-disciplinary team.  This team consists of Speech Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Remedial teacher, Social worker, Nurse and Teachers.  The Educational Psychologist is also involved in the following services at Prospectus Novus School.

  • New application assessments
  • Team discussions and weekly learner discussions
  • Parent guidance
  • Therapeutic interventions with learners
  • Professional development and training
  • If a child is in need of intensive therapeutic intervention (as well as additional assessments), the child will be referred to a Private Specialist.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE SOCIAL WORKER AT PROSPECTUS NOVUS

GENERAL

  • Participating in special education assessment meetings as well as individual
  • Working with those problems in a child’s living situation that affect the child
  • Preparing a social or developmental history on a child with a disability
  • Counseling (group, individual and/or family)
  • Mobilizing family, school and community resources to enable the child to learn as effectively as possible in his or her educational program.
  • Assisting in developing positive behavioural intervention strategies.

SERVICES TO LEARNERS

  • Providing crisis intervention.
  • Developing intervention strategies to increase academic success.
  • Assisting with conflict resolution and anger management.
  • Helping the child develop appropriate social interaction skills.
  • Assisting the child in understanding and accepting self and others.

SERVICES TO PARENTS / FAMILIES

  • Working with parents to facilitate their support their children’s school adjustment
  • Alleviating family stress to enable the child to function more effectively in school and community.
  • Assisting parents to access programs available to students with special needs.
  • Assisting parents in accessing and utilizing school and community resources.

SERVICES TO SCHOOL PERSONNEL

  • Providing staff with essential information to better understand factors (cultural, social, economic,familial, health, etc.)  affecting a student’s performance and behaviour

HOE LYK DIE KIND MET ‘N SPESIFIEKE LEERGESTREMDHEID EN  AANDAGTEKORT- HIPERAKTIWITEITSINDROOM? (ATHS)

Kinders met ATHS ondervind probleme om te konsentreer en om opdragte te voltooi. Hierdie leerders maak maklik onnodige foute en luister nie na opdragte of instruksies nie. Hulle is gewoonlik akademiese onderpresteerders en word maklik geëtiketteer as stout en ongehoorsaam. Hulle gaan gebuk onder ‘n swak akademiese selfbeeld en maak nie maklik maats nie.

Kinders met ATHS beskik oor ‘n mediese toestand, wat verband hou met die chemiese werking van die brein. Die brein beheer die persoonlikheid en gedrag van die mens. Daar is gevind dat kinders met ATHS se gedrag baie verskil van ander kinders as gevolg van ‘n chemiese wanbalans in die brein.

Met die nodige mediese en sosiale aandag kan leerders met ATHS gehelp word. Deur die regte diagnose te maak en deur die ATHS sindroom reg te bestuur kan hierdie leerders gehelp word om hulle self te laat geld op akademiese sowel as sosiale gebied.

OORSAKE VAN DIE AANDAGTEKORT- HIPERAKTIWITEITSINDROOM

Die ATHS word veroorsaak deur ‘n psigoneurologiese disfunksie (tekort of wanbalans van sekere neurotransmitters in die brein). Hier is ‘n baie sterk genetiese oorsprong.
