Curriculum
At the Autism Unit at Prospectus Novus School, the DCAPS (Differentiated Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement) curriculum is followed – a flexible framework derived from the nationally-used CAPS curriculum in South Africa. DCAPS is specifically designed to meet the diverse needs of learners with special educational needs, ensuring that all learners can learn effectively. The curriculum is adapted to cater to the individual needs of neurologically diverse learners. The specialised curricula and supportive environment is tailored to meet the unique needs of a learner with autism. Technology is used, such as educational tablets/computers, visual schedule apps and other media, to enhance learning and communication for learners. (Alternative Augmentative Communication – AAC)
Prospectus Novus School also provides services like speech therapy, occupational therapy and personalised educational plans to support each child’s development.
Therapeutic Approach
A multi-disciplinary approach, that offers integrated therapy to the learners with autism, which include: group therapy sessions and individual therapy sessions by therapists at the school (Speech/Language and Occupational Therapy and also the services of a Social Worker).
Integrated Support and Partnering with Parents
At Prospectus Novus School, therapies are fully integrated with what happens in the classroom and on the playground. Therapists aim to build on the learners’ strengths and use a differentiated approach to develop strategies to allow each pupil to reach their full potential by advancing their academic skills, social and emotional growth, and skills for independent living. The therapists work collaboratively with the teachers. We consider parents as part of this winning team and encourage open communication. Parents can expect to receive ongoing communication, resources for at-home support, and opportunities to participate in workshops and training sessions.

By die Outisme-eenheid van Prospectus Novus Skool word die DCAPS (Differentiated Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement)-kurrikulum gevolg – ’n buigsame raamwerk wat afgelei is van die nasionaal gebruikte KABV-kurrikulum in Suid-Afrika. DCAPS is spesifiek ontwerp om aan die uiteenlopende behoeftes van leerders met spesiale onderwysbehoeftes te voldoen, om te verseker dat alle leerders effektief kan leer. Die kurrikulum is aangepas om in die individuele behoeftes van neurologies diverse leerders te voorsien. Die gespesialiseerde kurrikulum en ondersteunende omgewing is aangepas om aan die unieke behoeftes van ’n leerder met outisme te voldoen. Tegnologie, soos opvoedkundige tablette, rekenaars, visuele skedule-toepassings en ander media word gebruik om leer en kommunikasie vir leerders te verbeter. Prospectus Novus Skool verskaf ook dienste soos spraakterapie, arbeidsterapie, en persoonlike opvoedkundige planne om elke kind se ontwikkeling te ondersteun.
Terapeutiese Benadering
’n Multi-dissiplinêre benadering, wat geïntegreerde terapie aan die leerders met outisme bied, sluit groep- en individuele terapiesessies in, onder leiding van die terapeute by die skool (Spraak-, Taal-, en Arbeidsterapie, asook die dienste van ’n maatskaplike werker).
Geïntegreerde Ondersteuning en Samewerking met Ouers
By Prospectus Novus Skool is terapie ten volle geïntegreer met wat in die klaskamer en op die speelgrond gebeur. Terapeute poog om voort te bou op die leerlinge se sterkpunte en gebruik ’n gedifferensieerde benadering om strategieë te ontwikkel om elke leerling toe te laat om hul volle potensiaal te bereik deur hul akademiese vaardighede, sosiale en emosionele groei, en vaardighede vir onafhanklike lewe te bevorder. Die terapeute en onderwysers werk nou saam met mekaar. Ons beskou ouers as deel van hierdie wenspan en moedig oop kommunikasie aan. Ouers kan verwag om deurlopende kommunikasie, hulpbronne vir tuisondersteuning, en geleenthede om aan werkswinkels en opleidingsessies deel te neem, te ontvang.
